The free agent class

Many teams will be looking at free agent outfielders this season. The Philadelphia Inquirer highlighted nine of these in their article Phillies 2025 outfield outlook: Free-agent options, prospect forecast, and more by Lochlahn March.

Predicting 2025 and 2026 performance

It’s natural to compare these players’ 2024 stats for a judgment of what their 2025 and 2026 might look like. However, I showed in my previous post that a player’s previous season OPS is only weakly predictive of next season’s.

A large portion of OPS variance is unpredictable due to natural variation of hot streaks and slumps, player health, and the baseball’s bloops and bounces. However, we may use the player’s age, their full career OPS, and statistics to model their aging curve. In the same previous post, I show that my model can predict a larger fraction of the variance.

Let’s use this model to forecast these outfielder’s 2025 and 2026 OPS. In some cases, the model will rank players substantially differently than their previous season’s OPS. Some players are on a steeper portion of the aging curve, and in some cases, a player’s 2024 OPS may be an outlier that the model is suspicious of.

Plotting the model fits

The spline fits of the statistical model shows an aging curve with a player peak typically around age 27.

The player’s “intercept” has a large variance, and is largely what captures the variety of player performance.

All 9 players

All but Soto

Highlighting some specific players

Juan Soto

New York Yankees hat dark logo

Soto is obviously on another level than the other players in this group. His 2024 season was even better than might have expected, and the model predicts continued elite performance.

Jesse Winker

New York Mets hat dark logo

Winker is predicted to improve on his 2024 season, and may come at a lower cost than Hernández or Santander.

Jurickson Profar

Profar had an excellent 2024, but the model predicts a regression in 2025. Was 2024 an outlier, or did he find something new in his swing?
